We need your thoughts. Where next for Netroots UK?

After running four events of different types now, we’re taking stock of the Netroots UK project, and deciding how to develop it this year and beyond.

We’ve got a couple of ideas, but it would be really helpful to get your feedback on some of the questions we’re considering.

We’ve put together a short survey, which should take only a minute or two, but which would give us some crucial insights into what you’d want to see at future Netroots UK events.

Thanks to everyone who came to our Digital Skills Day, run with Digital Action Lab at UNISON in Birmingham. We had a great time meeting an amazing group of campaigners, and it’s given us a lot to think about in terms of Netroots UK events.

Birmingham digital campaign skills workshop: Saturday 16 March

A partnership of Netroots UK and Digital Action Lab

On Saturday 16th March, we’re hosting a digital skills workshop in Birmingham for campaigners, charities and community groups. The workshop will cover the basics of successful campaign strategies, as well as setting up a blog/website, creating compelling digital content and using social media to raise awareness about your work.

If you want to learn more about using the internet to run an effective campaign, build a local group, or just to become a more effective digital activist, come and spend a day with us. You’ll gain new skills in campaign strategy and tactics, and get the chance to network with likeminded others from the Birmingham area.

What: One day workshop for campaigners, charities and community groups to improve their digital skills
When: Saturday 16th March, 10am-4pm
Where: UNISON Birmingham Office, 24 Livery Street Birmingham, B3 2PA
Cost: £10 waged, free for students and unwaged (we also have a bursary for a couple of free places so please get in contact if you’d like to come).

Tweeting for our NHS

One request we had at Netroots UK 2012 was for a Twitter list of the best people to follow to keep in the loop on NHS campaigning, so people have one quick place to check in for the latest. We’ve asked around and come up with this list of 33 medics, campaigners and journalists.

Over to you now – Who do you think we should add to the list? We’re looking for people who mostly tweet NHS news or actions and are interesting original sources, so need your thoughts please. Leave us a comment or tweet us @NetrootsUK – Can we make it up to an NHS Top 50?

Netroots UK 2012 interviews with visionOn.tv

DIY video specialists visionOn.tv ran a popular smartphone videomaking course at the conference on Saturday, teaching activists the guerilla way to plan, shoot and distribute your own video news, all within 10 minutes. They were also practicing what they preach by shooting a series of short interviews with people around the event, which you can see in this playlist.

Digital activism surgery: Netroots UK 2012 workshop

Wanting some guidance on how to improve your campaign’s use of social media and digital tools? Bring your campaign ideas, projects and problems and talk them through with us and with each other. This will be a practical workshop, with facilities to work on your projects and get experience in new techniques and tools that might help you.

Facilitators: Laurence Durnan (Political Scrapbook), Saira O’Mallie (Change.org)

Places will be strictly limited to 10 participants, and as we expect this to be a popular choice, we’re running pre-booking for it, so people can be assured of their place on the day. Any places not pre-booked online by the day of the event will be available on a signup list on reception as attendees arrive (and of course you’ll need a ticket to the overall day as well as a reservation here to get into the event).

Getting your group online with WordPress : Netroots UK 2012 workshop

Need a website for your branch, campaign or community? Learn the basics in building, managing and promoting a site yourself with the versatile free platform WordPress.com in this introductory hands on tutorial. Practical experience in using the software for all participants, and a chance to work on specific questions you might have about how to get your own project or group online.
